Brokenheart Puggles In A Nutshell

How I raise your perfect Puggle!

I bought my puggle, Ginger, in February of 2005 after losing our house dog of 10 years. She added so much to our family that I decided I wanted to raise these great little dogs. I am a full time farmer/rancher. I have 4 broiler houses raising some of the chicken you buy in the store. We also run about 300 head of Angus cattle. My farm is located in rural Arkansas...lots of room and peace. I have an Animal Science degree and so you can see how I ended up with a life that involves animals 24/7.

I now have Brokenheart Puggles. Construction was completed in June 2006 on a brand new kennel. The dogs all reside in 5x15 foot runs of which 10x5 is outside and 5x5 is inside. Everything is concrete. The kennel has a 3 ton heat and air unit. They stay 82 degrees in the summer and 75 in the winter. Each run has a doggie door to the outside. They drink out of water bottles which helps prevent bacteria because they can’t put their feet in the water and contaminate it. The kennel has a septic system big enough to take care of a 3 bedroom house. The outside runs are washed out at least once per day and the inside is washed out and disinfected twice per week, more if needed. The dogs listen to ESPN sports radio 24/7 so they are used to people talking. They are all die hard Arkansas Razorback fans of course, but so far all have learned to tolerate their new family's favorite team.

All puppies are out of registered female Beagles and registered Pug males. My puggle puppies come with American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC) registration papers. All dogs eat Purina Dog Chow. Mom’s with babies eat Purina Puppy Chow. All my dogs have names and are talked to personally everytime we go in the kennel. They get treats and lots of love. They each have a very distinct personality and a few are not happy unless they are "rooming" together.

When a girl has her pups she is given a calcium supplement once per day. The puppies are checked at birth for any obvious health concerns. They are given Probiacin, an active bacteria to help ensure that their stomachs start working properly. They are given vitamins every 8 hours for the first 3 days. Puppies are wormed every 10 days from birth until they leave. I do not let anyone with a reservation pick their puppy until the eyes are open as the first 12 days is when any health problems will arise. Unfortunately mom’s do sometimes lay on a puppy and the occasional puppy will fail to thrive. By the time a puppy’s eyes are open you can tell they are fat, healthy and happy.

Once puppies eyes are open my sons are allowed to play with them. At about age 4 weeks the puppies are given soft food daily. They are given Probiacin again before starting the soft food. They start spending a little time away from mom each day while they are eating. The puppies learn to play with each other and gain confidence during this time. Once they are big enough to climb out of the whelping box it is removed and they can start making the effort to climb through the doggie door to go outside into the run. They also spend a little time outdoors in a pen so they can feel the grass under their bellies. They like to feel it tickle their noses and they LOVE to wrestle and fight in the grass.  This is also a BIG socialization time. They see the other dogs, cats, cows, lawnmower, tractors, trucks, 4-wheelers and all the busy activity that goes on with farming.  We don't raise timid puppies.

Once puppies are chosen I try very hard to take photos once per week to send to their new family. I want each family to feel like they have bonded and know their puppy by the time it arrives. The puppies change rapidly and begin to really show their personalities by the time they are 5 weeks old. They are eating dry puppy chow each day by this time. At 6 weeks of age they receive their vaccinations. I watch them to make sure no one has a reaction to the vaccination. They will require shots at 9 and 12 weeks of age once they are in their new home.  Their shot and worming records will come with them.

All puppies are $500. I require a $100 deposit to reserve a puppy. When you tell me you want to reserve a spot on the waiting list or reserve a particular puppy I will invoice you through pay pal for the $100 deposit. Approximately 2 weeks before shipping I will invoice you for balance due. No puppy is shipped until payment is received. If you are picking your puppy up then the balance can be delivered in person.

Puppies can be picked up in person or shipped. I know many people are fearful of shipping and I completely understand those feelings. I had my Puggle shipped to me and it scared me to death. But she handled it beautifully. I am happy to provide a list of references who have had their Puggle shipped to all parts of the United States and Canada. Speaking with them will help alleviate your concerns. Shipping is an extra $300. This covers the travel crate, vet check, health certificate, airfare and trip to the airport.  I ship with Continental and American Airlines out of Tulsa, Oklahoma or Northwest and Delta out of Fort Smith, AR.  We try set the shipping dates a few weeks after the puppies are born.  Due to travel expenses we try and ship the puppies on the same day.   If you live in Canada I can ship to Vancouver and Calgary with Continental and to Montreal or Toronto with American Airlines.

Your puppy travels in a travel crate with absorbent bedding, food & water dish, paperwork and packet of food attached to top of crate. Your puppy will sleep most of the trip and be ready for ACTION when you get it home. Your puppy’s health contract, shot records and registration papers will be in a packet on top of the crate.

You must follow the guidelines contained in the contract about vet check and returning paperwork for the health contract to be valid.

Puppies go to the veterinarian for a health check before shipping. The vet checks ears, eyes, heart and does a fecal exam. All puppies are started on Albon (treats intestinal parasite) before shipping as stress can cause an upset to the system. This is just a preventative step I take.

Once your puppy arrives the real fun begins!!!
